Too often these days, parents feel they have no choice but to pack their child's schedules with adult-supervised, adult-driven activities such as organized sports. But, as a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) makes clear, such activities should not come at the expense of free and unstructured play, which is critical to healthy child development. baseball girlWhen my first daughter was born, 28 years ago, I was a very young, very optimistic woman. I was determined my daughter would not be gender-stereotyped. After all, it was the early 1970's; I had been doing my marching in Washington to ensure that she would have parity with all the little boys in anything she pursued. More >>

Here are the features to look for when buying in-line skates:

  • Boot/Cuff. A two-piece boot, with a hinged cuff, is better because it allows the skater to bend his knees more easily. The boot should have ventilation holes.
  • Brakes should be on the heel, never on the toe. Most youth skates have one heel brake, usually on the right skate, but...More>>

Basketball RefCats and dogs. Oil and water. Parents and youth sports officials. Some things just don't mix.

Parents and officials never seem to be on the same page. There always seems to be some tension between them. It often seems to parents that the person officiating must be seeing a different game than they are. Every call seems to go against their child's team. More >>

NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - There's never an off-season for extreme sports. Whether it's winter, spring, summer, or fall, at least one, two or more extreme sports are getting the time and attention of the American sporting public. More>>

Girls whispering at lockerThe now infamous video captured a May 3, 2003 hazing gone awry. As onlookers, some hoisting beer cups, cheered, senior girls at a suburban Chicago high school slugged juniors and showered them with mud, garbage, paint and feces, injuring five. More>>

Young adolescence is a critical time in a boy's physical and emotional development. There are few other times in a human being's life when bodies go through such profound change. An adolescent's body is growing up and out, and his emotions are running rampant as he seeks to understand who he is and how he fits into the world. Showing unconditional love in tangible ways is important. More >>

ApplesWhether it's training for a soccer game or playing a backyard game of catch, children's athletic performance, development, and growth depend largely on eating the right foods. Unfortunately, most children (and adults) forget just how important nutrition is to good health and athletic performance. More>>

The Fifty Percent "Solution"? Nick coached my son's travel soccer team one fall season. The season consisted of eight games, one every Saturday afternoon. The policy of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association was for every child to play a minimum of fifty percent of each game. Seems fair enough, right? Think again. More>>

The youth baseball team my sons had been playing on all spring had reached the championship game. There were two out in the bottom of the last inning. Our team was down by a run, but the bases were loaded. One of my sons, Taylor, was at the plate. It was a pressure-packed situation, but Taylor had been a clutch hitter all season long and was the team's leader in runs batted in. A walk would tie the game. A hit to the outfield might win it. Many youth sport parents have witnessed inappropriate behavior on the part of players, coaches and other parents at practices and during games. When they do, they may scratch their heads and think to themselves "I didn't think that we acted this way in our program." The problem is that, all too often, the behavioral guidelines for the program haven't been clearly spelled out in advance. More>>

James R. Tavares was the coach of a highly successful amateur basketball team in Massachusetts for players aged 13 to 17. Scores of his players had earned basketball scholarships at Division I colleges. But Tavares had a secret: an arrest record for sex offenses and an alleged history of sexually inappropriate conduct towards some of his players. More>>
